NAME(S): Thomas W. Smith
Thomas W. Smith, one of Durant's beloved pioneer citizens and for more
than 34 years a resident of this city, died Tuesday morning at a little past 7 o'clock at his home
on North Second avenue. The end came after a week's spell with pneumonia coupled with the
infirmities of old age. Mr. Smith was born in Paducah, Ky., 84 years ago, afterward moving to
Cumby, Texas, from which place he came to Durant.
In early manhood Mr. Smith was married to Miss Ida Crawford of Kentucky, and of this
union five children were born of whom three survive - B. G. Smith of Denison, Texas; Crawford
Smith of Mobile, Ala., and Miss Meta Smith of Durant. One grandchild, Corinne Smith, also survives.
Many years ago Mr. Smith united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church and became a
consistent member and interested member of that organization. He was a man of lovable nature
and was familiarly know to hundreds of his friends as "Uncle Tom."
Funeral services were conducted at the first Baptist church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
and was in charge of Rev. R. C. Miller and Rev. W. N. Sholl.
Active pallbearers were Messrs. Frank Hinkson, Bob Vaughan, John Bowers, Bill Fry, Clarence
Leach and Amos Knight.
Honorary pallbearers were Messrs. Gree Thompson, Kirk Amis, Lee Currin, Benton Fuller,
John Leonard, Lloyd Power, H. S. Bates, G. T. Stubbs, George Carroll, Ben Shaver, J. A. Stevens,
