NOTES
Ernst & Wanda were 2nd generation German-Americans. Ernst's father Christian came over in 1860 at age 18 with his mother. Wanda's father, Ernst Salge stowed aboard a freighter on which his two cousins had payed. He was discovered but the captain allowed him to work for his passage. He was 19 and was trying to escape the draft in Prussia. His parents and younger brother came over the following year, but their mother died while enroute and was buried at sea in 1867. Ernst & Wanda bought land (160 acres) near the Dietz Community and built their house which was in the family until the mid 1970's when Wanda died. Ernst died in 1957. They had 3 children. Alida, the eldest, Herbert who died at 9 months old, & Ruby the youngest. Alida had 4 children, 23 grandchildren. Ruby had two daughters. Ernst & Wanda were farmers, frugal, neat, good people. They kept their language at home. Alida didn't know any English when she started to school at age 6, and when she finished 8th grade, Ernst said she had enough education for a girl. Wanda wouldn't speak English in front of strangers because she was ashamed of her accent.
